Getting a license - Step by step guide (class 5)

We here at Access can be your first step on your path towards obtaining your driver’s license. The following is a basic guide of this process from the perspective of the S.A.A.Q (Société d'Assurance d'Automobile du Québec):

In order to obtain your class 5 driving license you must pass three exams:

  1. A theoretical exam at the driving school
  2. A theoretical exam at the SAAQ • BOOK AN EXAM
  3. A practical exam at the SAAQ • BOOK AN EXAM

* The SAAQ will issue your learner’s permit upon successful completion of the first theoretical exam
** The minimum wait time between the first and the second theoretical exam is 10 months
*** The minimum wait time between the second theoretical exam and the final practical exam is 2 months

THEORY EXAMS:
Your theory exams will be multiple-choice exams comprised of multiple sections covering the car, the road network, and driver attitude as well as the highway safety code, road signs and specialization class 5. You need a 75% to pass each exam.

PRACTICAL EXAM:
{1} When the SAAQ issues you your learner's permit, after successfully passing your first theoretical exam at the driving school, you are now allowed to drive a car with the restriction that someone who has held a license for more than two years has to be next to you. You have to hold this permit for a minimum of 1 year before you are eligible to do the third exam - the road test.

{2} After successfully passing your first theoretical exam at the driving school, the SAAQ issues you your learner's permit. This allows you to drive a car with the restriction that someone who has held a license for more than two years has to be next to you.

The road test is 30 min long. A monitor present in the car will evaluate you and again you need a 75% to pass.

YOU'RE DONE!
Upon completion of your course you are eligible for insurance reduction on your car. This reduction is available to you because you did your lessons at a certified driving school. Many companies will offer you 3 years experience, which could save you hundreds of dollars per year. See the ‘Car insurance section’ for more information on this subject.
